This is a question I get A LOT but to be fair most of us, including myself, don’t think about going to see our medical doctor until we feel sick.  This is because, in my opinion, we have been trained that lack of symptoms equals health and that just isn’t true.  According to the World Health Organization health is “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

Think about this….a guy walks into the emergency room at his local hospital, let’s call him Bob, and he is having crushing chest pain.  Bob is hooked up to an EKG and low and behold he is found to be in the middle of a massive myocardial infarction (heart attack).  My question for you is this, was Bob healthy yesterday when he was pain free??  No, of course he wasn’t and that is because pain isn’t a warning sign of a problem coming but rather an end result of a body that can no longer adapt to poor function.

Bob most likely has had undiagnosed problems for some time and they have gone unnoticed because much like pain other symptoms don’t show up until the body is no longer able to adapt.

Our bodies are absolutely amazing and they work hard to keep us going; they are able to do this by adapting to injuries and stresses that occur on a daily basis.

What most of us end up doing (and I’ll be the first to admit I did this too in the past) is we wait until we can’t bear our symptoms any longer then head to see our doctor.  Depending on which doctor you choose your path will be much different.

Your medical doctor is going to treat your symptoms.  This symptom based method of care makes up the vast majority of healthcare in the US and it is because of this that we, according to Bloomberg’s 2017 Healthiest Country Index, rank 34th out of 50 countries.

This is not a bash on medical care by any stretch, in fact when it comes to emergency care the US can’t be beat but that is because of one huge reason… true life or death health care treats the cause of the problem, not the symptom!

Now let’s look at the chiropractic approach.  If you happen to follow VitalityChiropractic864.761.0322 on Facebook you have seen my videos explaining that chiropractic, much like emergency medicine, works by treating the cause of your dis-ease or symptom.

Gray’s Anatomy states that “every organ, system and function of the human body is under direct control of the central nervous system”.  Misalignments (subluxations) of the spine causes pressure to be put on a nerve and that pressure causes an interference in this communication between the brain and the body; this interference is the cause of the majority of dis-ease/symptoms/illness.

Chiropractors focus on correcting those subluxations which in turn removes the interference and restores normal function in your body and when your body is functioning at its fullest potential you will express health to the fullest potential.

Here’s the catch…chiropractic isn’t designed to be the first line of treatment for anything but rather it’s goal is in prevention or wellness care (this is why most insurance companies don’t cover chiropractic care and NONE of them will cover wellness or preventive care).

If you are going to the chiropractor for treatment of an illness or symptom please know that it takes time for the body to heal.  It took sometimes years to get to the point of experiencing symptoms, it will take more than a few adjustments to correct all the damage.

This is where traditional medical care and chiropractic work so well together.

True healing takes time and repetition however and in some cases it could be dangerous to wait for this healing to occur.

Take for instance high blood pressure.  While chiropractic can certainly help it wouldn’t be a good idea to avoid taking medications to keep your blood pressure within normal parameters because uncontrolled blood pressure can lead to things like strokes or kidney failure.  However, being under the care of both a chiropractor and your medical doctor is a win-win.

Medications weren’t designed to be taken for life but rather just long enough for the body to heal and when chiropractic is blended with traditional medical care the body is able to heal without complications.
